If you’re stuck in the coffee-to-cabernet cycle—meaning you need to be stimulated awake in the morning and essentially sedated to sleep at night—and want to find a solution that isn’t followed by a crash for making it through the energy rollercoaster that is your average day, it might be worth adding a little aromatherapy into your life. And thanks to a new product from luxe botanical skin-care line Linné, it’s never been easier to awaken or calm your senses.
The product is called Rise & Rest, and it consists of a duo of rollerball essential oil blends—one to liven you up in the morning, and the other to help you decompress at night (or any time of day in which you’re in need of a little cortisol reduction—aka always).

The former, Rise, is made with hydrating squalane (your skin’s BFF) and an essential oil blend consisting of orange, red mandarin, balsam fir, black spruce, black pepper, coriander, holy basil, and sea buckthorn oil. “The first four essential oils in this blend are for comfort, and then you bring in the zest,” says Amy Anthony, certified aromatherapist at NYC Aromatica.
Citrus essential oils—like the orange and red mandarin used in this product—never fail to brighten moods, says Anthony. “They’re like vacation, summer—they bring people to a happy place,” she says. Red mandarin specifically, Anthony adds, is like “a warm hug.” Balsam fir and black spruce then step in to add a sweetness into the mix, for an overall effect that’s brightening and has a clarifying effect, helping to lift brain fog. Black pepper helps with mental clarity, too; plus it adds a fiery, sexy element. Coriander, meanwhile, acts as a mood modulator. “It’s really nice for aches and pains,” Anthony says.
Ultimately, she sums the Rise formula up as follows: “It can start to open and penetrate and clarify with the citruses and conifers [aka balsam fir and black spruce] and then go in with the heavy hitters like black pepper and coriander and holy basil to really bring that alertness.”
As far as the Rest formula goes, Anthony says it’s not your average sedative oil. While a classic sleep blend will typically contain lavender and chamomile, she says, this one specifically uses varieties of lavender and (expensive!) chamomile that are calming, rather than sleep-inducing. Ylang ylang, or “poor man’s jasmine,” then adds a vibe Anthony describes as happy and sexy, while frankincense helps to open you up to gain clarity—hence why it’s often used in meditation. And finally, petitgrain sur fleurs—another citrus, common in perfumery—purports to help stabilize the nervous system.
While Rise & Rest is specifically divided into two vials, each designed for the purposes outlined above, Anthony notes that for some people, Rise may be just as calming as Rest, given its sort of “happy” overall profile.
I tried both formulas and found that I fell into the category of finding Rise relaxing, in that I didn’t get a caffeine-like boost, but it lifted my grumpy-morning mood and calmed my mind so that I could actually tackle the day’s tasks with something approaching aplomb. Rest, meanwhile, felt more subtly calming, like a warm evening cup of chamomile tea. And while neither has actually replaced my coffee or my cabernet (or my cannabis, for that matter!), I find that both bring me to a happier, less frenetic and more serene place. I’ll be using them to rise and rest throughout the exciting-yet-undoubtedly-overwhelming shot girl summer ahead.
