I love the book not just because she has a soothing voice, but also because listening to how she overcame the obstacles in her career and personal life put me at ease—she felt so relatable and her insight felt so applicable to certain areas of my well-being journey. Be Well by Dr. Jessica Clemons
Confession: I am well acquainted with anxiety. I don’t often present as an anxious person, nor do I feel uneasy talking to new folks. But, I’m someone who experiences racing thoughts and poor concentration when stressed, which often translates into frustration at myself. Listening to Be Well by Dr. Jessica Clemons was like getting a warm light switched on inside my heart. It’s helping me realize that it’s okay to feel a range of emotions when coping with my mental health: surprise, shame, or even fear. Dr. Clemons offers bite-sized, easy-to-understand insights on mental health and stigmas. Her soothing narration made me feel open and safe in a non-judgmental place so I could be open to the book’s insights and resources. My biggest takeaway so far? Mind Body Zone: Living Outside the Box by Deepak Chopra
I’m going to be honest: I’ve never been a big fan of meditation. It’s always seemed to woo-woo for my very tactical-oriented brain. But when I heard people raving about Deepak Chopra’s new Audible Original podcast, I decided to give it a listen—including the short meditation sessions at the conclusion of each episode. And if I’m being honest again, the episodes are fantastic. Hearing Jon Batiste talk about how his creativity flows from his belief in his Creator, and Oprah Winfrey share her powerful story of vulnerability was inspiring. But the way Chopra contributes practical wisdom that make these inspiring stories feel applicable to your own life is the real magic of each listen, and it’s perfectly executed in each episode’s meditation session that invites you to reflect on what you’ve just heard. As an enthusiast of all things cosmic, when I spotted Valerie Tejeda’s audiobook on aligning self-care regimens with lunar phases, I had to dive in—immediately. Self Care By the Moon is a treasure trove of guided meditations, visualization tips, affirmations, and moon-based activities, with something for self-care beginners and seasoned practitioners alike. I found Tejeda’s narration to be soft and empathetic, but what really drew me in were her doable tips on implementing lunar actions. Like using the waning crescent moon to unwind and restore with some serious snuggle time with my dog or setting intentions in my journal during the new moon (you’ll have to tune in to learn why). Tejeda’s self-care practices are direct with a relatable takeaway to keep in mind. “The cosmos are here to inspire our lives, but they are not in control of our lives,” Tejeda says, and I couldn’t agree more. —Stephanie Valente, Associate Editor
The High 5 Habit by Mel Robbins
I’m someone who strongly believes in personal growth via radical autonomy, so I was moved to listen to The High 5 Habit by Mel Robbins. The philosophy informing The High 5 Habit is that nobody can change your life except you, which is a mindset that I work to honor and practice every day. She not only gives spiritual advice for living one’s best life, but also relays compelling, science-based data on how to improve self-esteem and confidence. The simplest way to move towards these goals, says Robbins, is by giving yourself a meaningful high five in the mirror each day. As a Leo who loves interacting with herself on any reflective surface, this is the perfect tool for me.
